FLOODCAST

FloodCast is an advanced, API-accessible flood simulation engine for high-speed, high-resolution flood modelling at all scales. It supports near real-time risk assessment, planning and operational response. Geospatial Insight launched it in September 2025, and it integrates the FastFlood App developed by partner FastHazard. The provider reports simulations up to 1,500 times faster than conventional modelling, with near real-time model performance (under one minute). It also reports accuracy above 95% in key use cases during trials, and says forecast outputs have been independently validated against observed flood events. FloodCast covers fluvial, pluvial, coastal and dam-break events and outputs flood extent, depth and velocity.

The model routes surface flow across a digital elevation model, with elevation data at resolutions up to 50 cm, using a multi-directional flow-routing algorithm based on the fast-sweeping method. Other inputs are ground sensor networks and river gauges, forecast data (e.g. ECMWF and national weather models) and historical flood databases. Users can adjust variables such as rainfall, defences and discharge points to test several scenarios, both before an event and while it unfolds. For live flood monitoring and damage analytics, FloodCast is integrated with satellite, aerial and drone imagery.
